Arstor, Earl of Carim, also known as Arstor the Impaler, is a mentioned character in Dark Souls and a mentioned character in Dark Souls III.

Lore[]

A somewhat sinister character, Arstor is responsible for the creation of Purging Stones and the Shotel, and is linked to the various "bite rings", like the Cursebite, Bloodbite and Poisonbite Ring.[1][2][3][4][5]

He is also known to have favored a spear which gave him the nickname of "impaler". He may also have used it to fight the Curse-rotted Greatwood, as the spear was found within the Greatwood's belly.[6] Although said spear is enwreathed in poisonous meat, it is unknown if this was an effect of the Greatwood consuming it, or if it was part of the weapon when Arstor wielded it.

Trivia[]

  • Arstor, Earl of Carim, may be based on the iconic ruler Vlad III of Wallachia, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula. Vlad, who gave inspiration to the myth of Dracula the Vampire, has many legends surrounding his rulership, which include the impaling of his enemies upon spikes (similar to Arstor's description), and an association with blood in his vampiric legend, similar to the Bloodbite Ring. Additionally, the design of the square-cut gems on the Carim rings is similar to the gem on the crown of Vlad III in his Ambras Castle portrait.
