The Avelyn is a crossbow in Dark Souls.
In-Game Description
- Repeating crossbow cherished by the weapon craftsman Eidas. Its elaborate design makes it closer to a work of art than a weapon. Intricate mechanism makes heavy damage possible through triple-shot firing of bolts, but in fact each bolt inflicts less damage.
Availability
The Avelyn is located in The Duke's Archives, in the second, larger chamber that the player comes upon after departing from the very first elevator.
Its chest is sitting on top of a bookcase to the left of the Channeler. Reaching Avelyn requires the player to jump off of the rotating staircase while it is still in motion.
Characteristics
Avelyn is a special crossbow that fires three bolts in quick succession, almost tripling the damage output one might expect from a crossbow. Reload times are short, but can still leave a player helpless if an enemy is close enough. When all the bolts hit, Avelyn is the highest-damage crossbow in the game.
Despite its unique nature, Avelyn is considered a standard crossbow and can be upgraded as such.
Notes
There is a way to get Avelyn without moving off the staircase. When a save is loaded, the game will not put the player on any piece of environment that can move. This includes all elevators, platforms, and it also includes the stairs in The Duke's Archives. You may have noticed in the past that your souls got dropped in the last "solid" place you were standing if you died in an odd position. Follow these detailed (but simple) steps to get Avelyn without having to jump off a moving staircase.
- Begin by rotating the stairs so that the lower part is connected to the side closest to the item chest.
- Walk down the stairs and onto the "solid ground" of this level.
- Open your inventory and close it to force an autosave.
- Walk back up the stairs and toggle the controls to rotate the stairs once.
- Quit the game.
- Load your savegame. You should now be on the platform above the bookcase with the chest on it. The stairs should be rotated away from you so you can walk off the ledge.
- WALK off the ledge and land on the bookshelf. You should take 50-60% of your total life from this fall.
- Grab the item from the chest.
