Carthus of the Sands is a mentioned location in Dark Souls III. Though the player passes through its catacombs, they never visit the land proper.

Lore Edit

Carthus is a desert kingdom[1][2] known for its swordsmen. Once upon a time, Carthus had its rightful rulers, until Wolnir conquered most kingdoms known to their people and made himself High Lord.[3]

Carthus' aggression has been likened to an uncontrollable fire, and since ancient times its beacon has been used as a signal for war.[4] The land's swordsmen utilized curved swords, forged from special titanite,[5] and were quite dexterous,[6] having developed a particular sword technique that allowed for fluid movement with a curved sword; masters of the technique were said to dazzle their opponents by moving as weightlessly as a grain of sand.[1][2] The swordsmen also applied a special substance to their blades to inflict greater lacerations, which lent the weapons a sanguine color.[7]

Since Carthus' swordsmen attached great value to victory, they did not shun the use of pyromancies, a typically disdained art, to supplement their fighting style,[8] and actually favored certain pyromancies.[9] Carthus pyromancies were crafted for battle, and developed in isolation from other forms, which explains their divergent evolution.[10] After High Lord Wolnir fell to the Abyss, grave wardens discovered black flame pyromancies.[11][12][13][14]

At some point, the grave wardens of Carthus repelled a great sand worm and drove it into the catacombs, until it settled in the Smouldering Lake far below.[15]
