The Cathedral Knight Greatshield has a very good weight to stability ratio, boasting a higher stability than many of its peers when fully upgraded while remaining one of the lightest greatshields that still offers 100% physical damage absorption. This, combined with its relatively low Strength requirement and early availability (players can obtain it at the Cathedral of the Deep, before defeating their first Lord of Cinder), makes it an economical choice for players who want a greatshield that is effective against physical damage sources.
The other main characteristic of the Cathedral Knight Greatshield is its high Dark defense, making it effective against attacks and spells of that nature. It is tied with Havel's Greatshield for the highest Dark defense among greatshields (only being beat by the Crest Shield, which is a medium shield), while having a significantly lower weight and Strength requirement. This makes it a very useful shield to face enemies in Dark Souls III: The Ringed City, particularly against Darkeater Midir, whose physical attacks deal partial Dark damage.
However, its non-Dark elemental defenses can be found wanting, as it is barely capable of blocking 60% of other damage types. When facing threats that are capable of dealing other types of elemental damage, it may be wise to rely on a different shield.
