- Main article: Weapon Types (Dark Souls III)
Crossbows are a type of weapon in Dark Souls III. Crossbows are a ranged weapon type that requires a modest investment in strength and dexterity. These weapons offer no scaling and thus very low level characters are able to wield them at their full potential. Crossbows may be "fired from the hip" but require the player to reload between shots as indicated by an arrow head in the top portion of the weapon icon. When this arrow head is highlighted, the crossbow is ready to fire. If it is not, the crossbow must be re-loaded by pressing the attack button to fire.
Crossbows can be equipped in either the left or right hand weapon slots. All crossbows have a "zoom" feature that allows the player to get a closer look at their aim point. It should be noted that different types of Bolts have varying ranges that add to a specific crossbow's range. This affects the accuracy of the projectile resulting in some shots seeming inaccurate (this does not affect locked-on shots). Range can also be increased by equipping the Hawk Ring.
