Demon's Souls is a third-person action role playing game released in Japan on February 5th, 2009, and in North America on October 6th of the same year for the PlayStation 3 gaming console. It was developed by From Software with the help of Sony Japan and published by Atlus. Namco Bandai Games published the game for Australia and Europe on June 23rd and June 25th, 2010, respectively.

Plot[]

Set in a dark fantasy world, most of the gameplay takes part in the southern kingdom of Boletaria which has been cursed with a terrible, deep fog brought upon by the Old One, causing demons to come forth and devour the souls of men. The game is described a spiritual successor to the King's Field series.

Reception[]

Demon's Souls received critical acclaim in North America and Japan for its dark fantasy design, variation in combat choice and integrated online interactions. It was particularly known for its high difficulty level, with many critics noting it as a genuine challenge. The game was a commercial success, selling 39,966 copies in its first week in Japan and boosting PlayStation 3 sales in that region. In North America, Demon's Souls debuted at the eleventh place on October of 2009, according to the NPD group, with 150,000 sold, selling 500,000 by September 2010.

The success of the game spawned three spiritual successors, beginning with Dark Souls in 2011, Dark Souls II in 2014 and Dark Souls III in 2016.
