The Balder Side Sword is a straight sword in Dark Souls.

In-Game Description

The knights of the ancient kingdom of Balder wielded these rock-solid, long swords which are excellent for thrust attacks.

Balder was the home of Knight King Rendal, but the kingdom was reduced to ruins after a widespread outbreak of Undead.

Availability

The Balder Side Sword is dropped by Balder Knights that wield it the Undead Parish and Sen's Fortress.

Since the drop rate is low, using the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring or Symbol of Avarice and 10 liquid Humanity is recommended. As the sword is available long before any of the item discovery boosting gear it may be preferable to use a substitute weapon until the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring is obtained.

Characteristics

The Balder Side Sword improves on the already good straight sword moveset by replacing the usual strong attacks with a unique thrust combo that has greatly increased damage, at the cost of losing the advancing slash of standard two-handed straight swords. It is also significantly longer than other straight swords. It's long reach and powerful thrusts makes it a great weapon for counter attacking, especially when paired with the Leo Ring.

While the standard Longsword can outdamage it on quality builds, the Balder Side Sword's low Strength requirement and heavy focus on Dexterity scaling allows it to reach similar damage to most other straight swords in the game at a lower stat investment. The low stat requirements and powerful strong attacks also makes it a good candidate for the Magic and Divine upgrade paths.

Moveset

Attack	Description

One-handed Strong Attack	Wielder pulls back, and then lunges forward. Some starting lag, but excellent reach and damage.
Two-handed Weak Attack	Diagonal swings. Almost no starting and ending lag, and has very low stamina consumption.
Two-handed Strong Attack	Wielder pulls back, and then lunges forward. Some starting lag, but excellent reach and damage.
Jump Attack	Leaps while stabbing forward. Good reach, but relatively slow starting and ending lag.
Running Attack	Horizontal swing. Wide hitbox, low starting lag. When two-handed, a vertical swing is executed instead.
Rolling Attack	Diagonal swing. Similar to the running attack.
Kick	Standard kick.
Left-handed Weak Attack	Standard block.
Left-handed Strong Attack	Diagonal swings. Similar to the two-handed weak attack.
