"Below us lies the ruins of the legendary city of Izalith. There, the Molten Giant watches over the Flame of Chaos. Our Fair Lady, and Mistress Quelaag, fled from the ruins. I do not know the details...And I do not ask..."
Eingyi

Ceaseless Discharge (爛れ続けるもの, Creature of Perpetual Suffering), also known as the Molten Giant[1], is a boss in Dark Souls.

Location[]

Ceaseless Discharge is found in the Demon Ruins. He stands on a field of lava below a rocky cliff, keeping vigil in front of the corpse of one of his sisters. She is laid to rest on an altar, alongside the Gold-Hemmed Black Set. The path leading into the boss arena crosses over a large pit before leading to the cliff overlooking the lava field.

Description[]

Ceaseless Discharge is an imposing creature of monstrous size. He wields no weapons, and instead uses his fiery tendrils to fight. His deformed face retains a look of pain, as the sores attained at birth swell with lava. From his head sprout two horns and seven glowing, red eyes that are partially covered by his wrinkled skin. Meanwhile, the right side of his body is framed by a "rib cage" made of insect-like appendages. Ten more tendrils appear on his back and his left arm coils around his chest, fused to his body. His body is the source of the lava that floods the lower levels of the Demon Ruins, making the area impassable.

Ceaseless Discharge can be found on the far end of his arena, watching over the corpse of his sister, and must be engaged in battle. Once he is defeated, the lower parts of the area will drain of lava, allowing the Chosen Undead to explore the remainder of the Demon Ruins.

Lore[]

Ceaseless Discharge is the youngest child and only known son of the Witch of Izalith[2][3]. However he was born with sores inflamed by the lava flowing in Izalith and so his older sisters, the witches of Izalith, gave him a magical ring to ease his pain[2].

Around the same time, Izalith was experimenting with her Lord Soul and the power of fire and souls and at a certain point, driven by ambition and arrogance, she tried to create a "First Flame" of her own, using her own Lord Soul as a basis to make a power similar to the primordial force that had brought life into the world[4][5][6]. The experiment, however, was not entirely successful because the result was a Flame of Chaos, an unstable power that the witch was unable to control. Izalith herself was initially consumed by it and became a beast of chaos fire along with two of her daughters in the process transforming themselves into a "Bed of Chaos"[5][6]. This creature, fueled by the power of the Flame of Chaos, became a seebed for a new life form: Demons[5].

Unfortunately, this affected the son of Izalith too and he became the first demon to manifest itself. However, the still unstabilized Flame of Chaos led him to transform into a monstrous demon and drop his magical ring [3] causing another distorted Centipede Demon to spawn from where his ring dropped[2]. Even if he was the first demon the Flame of Chaos inside his body was still unstable and he didn't have the knowledge to control it leaving it to burn him constantly[3] Despite him becoming the first failed creature created by the Bed of Chaos, Izalith and her daughters managed at a certain point to stabilize the new power they had created and began to generate the first real demons[7], life forms with stable bodies and capable of control the flame of chaos within each of them.

After Izalith lost control over the Flame of Chaos that devoured her city and some of her daughters managed to escape it[8], Ceaseless Discharge managed to survive the war that the Silver Knights of Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight waged against its kind[9] and he remained to protect the ruins of its home, gazing up at where his remaining sisters live, as the only source of comfort in his pitiful, painful existence is the belief that they are watching over him[3].

Strategies[]

Upon entering the boss arena, Ceaseless Discharge does not immediately attack the player, instead standing vigil over his sister's corpse. The player must initiate the fight by attacking Ceaseless Discharge, or by looting the Gold-Hemmed Black Set from his sister. If the fight is initiated through the former method, Ceaseless Discharge will begin fighting the player as normal, and will return to his passive state upon player death, requiring the player to attack him to begin the fight again. However, if his sister's corpse is pillaged, Ceaseless Discharge will become enraged, ripping his arm out of his torso cavity and revealing a large lava sore that was previously kept staunched by the arm, and becomes permanently hostile for all remaining attempts at fighting the boss.

Ceaseless Discharge will attack the player using a combination of his tendrils and flame projectiles, as well as his left arm should he have access to it. His attacks are primarily physical-focused, though if the player is out of range he can cast a highly-damaging plume of flame instead. Because he stands in the lava field below the cliff, it is impossible to directly attack Ceaseless Discharge with melee weapons unless he swings at the player first. As he is immune to Fire damage, Firebombs cannot hurt him, and the player must instead rely on Bows or non-Pyromancy spells in order to damage him. Dodging his physical attacks and then counter-attacking by hitting his arm or tendrils also allows players without access to ranged combat to damage Ceaseless Discharge.

Should the player have enraged Ceaseless Discharge and caused him to rip his arm out of his torso, it is possible to defeat him with only a few attacks. By retreating back to the fog door and crossing over the large pit at the start of the arena, the player puts themselves out of reach of Ceaseless Discharge's physical attacks. In a move of desperation, Ceaseless Discharge will attempt to jump over the pit, but fall short and grab onto the bridge that the player is on. In this state, he is incapable of attacking and is fully at the player's mercy. Attacking his arm at this point will cause him to lose his grip and fall into the pit, ending the battle. However, if Ceaseless Discharge's left arm is still fused to his torso, he will instead perform ranged fire attacks to damage the player, which are very difficult to dodge on the narrow bridge path.

Attacks[]

Slam[]

322 - 541 - Fire / Strike No Both Slow

The slam's area of damage is actually much larger than the tendril itself: It creates a very wide shock wave that will damage the player even if there is no contact with said tendril. Players should stay clear away from the point of impact, and attempt a dodge even if it seems unnecessary.

Fiery Slam []

This attack is triggered when the player cannot be reached by his other attacks. A wide gust of fire is blasted from a short limb slammed on the ground. The attack can not be blocked and has tremendous range. Can only be avoided if the player stays close to the point of impact where the damage cone is narrow.

This attack is discernible from other slam attacks by Ceaseless Discharge lighting the tip of his tendrils on fire.

Notes[]

  • Ceaseless Discharge's name refers to the endless flow of lava pouring from the sores on his body, which floods the lower levels of the Demon Ruins.
  • If the player has aggravated Ceaseless Discharge by looting his sister's corpse, and then dies during the fight, his left arm will reset to its previous state in subsequent attempts. However, he will still be aggressive and immediately attack the player for these later attempts.
    • Traversing the arena and approaching his sister's corpse in subsequent attempts will agitate him and cause him to rip his left arm out of his torso. This allows the player to defeat him using the shortcut method.
