The Uchigatana is a katana in Dark Souls III.

In-Game Description

A unique katana characterized by the fine craftsmanship of an eastern land where it was forged.
The finely-sharpened blade cuts flesh like butter and causes bleeding, but breaks easily as a result.
Skill: Hold
Assume a holding stance to rapidly execute a lunging slash with normal attack, or a deflecting parry with strong attack.

Availability[]

Guaranteed drop from the Sword Master in the Cemetery of Ash. He can be found by taking the left path, just before the main entrance to Firelink Shrine.

Even though he is found early in the game, he is quite strong and has a fair amount of health. An easy way to kill him is to knock him off a ledge. If that's the case, resting at the nearby bonfire will make his weapon appear at his spawning spot, at the top of the stairs.

Characteristics[]

Serving as the baseline for the katana class, the Uchigatana features fast attacks for its weight, strong Dexterity scaling, and Bleed build-up. Its combination of slashes and a powerful thrust on the one-handed strong attack give it a versatile moveset not unlike that of the Long Sword, while the advancing slash of the Hold skill provides an offensive option for closing distance with, or keeping up with, an opponent, as well as a wide horizontal attack that can be useful against multiple opponents, or single agile ones. Furthermore, Hold provides a strong parry, meaning shields with Weapon Skill can be used without entirely eliminating the option to parry, though the sheathing animation of Hold makes it far less accessible than a shield that can parry on its own.

Furthermore, it is the earliest attainable katana in the game, and thus is a good starting weapon for Dexterity builds, though obtaining it from the Sword Master can prove challenging at the start of a playthrough. As such players struggling to obtain the Uchigatana may want to consider the wide selection of Dexterity-focused weapons that can be bought from the Shrine Handmaid. While other katanas found later in the game have more pronounced strengths and weaknesses that may make players favor them over the Uchigatana, the Uchigatana's average performance makes it a solid choice throughout the entire game.
