The Greatsword of the Forlorn is a greatsword exclusive to Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin.

In-Game Description

Greatsword of the Forlorn, who wander the land of the Undead.
The King's elder brother Aldia sought to overcome the curse through means unalike his sibling's.
The Forlorn were born of Aldia's sinful infatuation.

Availability

Purchased from Straid of Olaphis for 10,000 souls, once five or more Forlorn dark spirits are defeated, with the fifth, or later, being a greatsword wielder. The Forlorn found in Aldia's Keep do not count, as they are not invaders.

Characteristics

The Greatsword of the Forlorn is a very potent weapon, with the ability to deal massive damage in three different ways.

The weapon deals a great deal of both physical and Dark damage, as well as a good amount of Bleed build-up. This makes the weapon useful against most foes.

The weapon's main mechanic is that it, similarly to the Dark Pyromancy Flame and the Scythe of the Forlorn, scales with how hollow the player is. In human form, it will have an extremely low attack rating, while it will have a slightly above-average damage output when fully hollowed.

Its moveset is similar to that of the Charred Loyce Greatsword; however, two-handed light attacks are standard greatsword swings.

The Greatsword also has a very interesting interaction with some infusions. Infusing the weapon with poison will give the weapon poison damage without reducing any base damage stats. However, physical scaling is still reduced, although the Dark scaling will be boosted to a B. Infusing the weapon with bleed will actually give a small increase to all base damage, with the Bleed damage receiving a much larger boost. The scaling will take a similar effect to poison infusions, however. Infusing the weapon with dark will only grant a C scaling, but due to matching the innate Dark damage, the player will get considerably more scaling out of this C than the B scaling the status infusions provide.

Notes

  • Despite its low attack rating, it is still able to hit most enemies for over 300 damage on a light attack. However, fully hollowing will only increase the damage by around 100 to 200 per swing.
  • Invading or being summoned to another player's world while hollowed to any degree will temporarily retain the greatsword's hollow scaling with no HP penalty to the player. This makes the weapon especially useful in co-op and during bell invasions, if the player has a means of healing.
  • The Ring of Binding can be used to counteract the HP loss while avoiding the damage penalty.
