Negative Status Effects are a gameplay mechanic in Dark Souls III.

Description[]

When the player is inflicted with a status effect, a bar will appear in their HUD that indicates the current buildup of the effect. Once the bar is filled, the effect will proc. Status effects will hinder a character's performance in combat in various ways. Status effects may also affect enemies and bosses, but certain enemies will be more resistant than others, while some will be outright immune to certain effects.

Status Effects[]

Poison[]

The Poison status effect inflicts damage over time on the afflicted target, slowly draining their HP while the status effect is active. While the damage is generally low, if left untreated it can inflict a non-negligible amount of overall damage. It can be prevented or cured by consuming a Purple Moss Clump.

Toxic[]

A stronger form of Poison, Toxic inflicts also damage over time, but is deadlier in that it is three times as strong. It also inflicts a stamina regeneration penalty on the target, reducing their ability to recover stamina. It can be prevented or cured by consuming a Blooming Purple Moss Clump.

Bleed[]

The Bleed status effect causes instant burst damage upon proc, and then immediately reset, allowing it to be inflicted again. Unlike Poison and Toxic, which deal a static amount of damage, Blood Loss will inflict damage based on the target's maximum HP, meaning that it is effective at all stages of the game. Bleed procs can be prevented by consuming a Bloodred Moss Clump.

Frostbite[]

New to Dark Souls III, Frost will inflict immediate burst damage upon proc, and then inflict a debuff upon the target. While under the effects of Frostbite, targets will suffer from decreased absorption, causing them to take additional damage, as well as significantly reduced stamina recovery speed. Frostbite proc can be prevented or cured by consuming a Rime-blue Moss Clump, and once procced can also be cured by taking any sort of Fire damage.

Curse[]

The most dangerous status effect in the game, Curse will cause instant and immediate Death if the status effect bar completely fills up. The only way to prevent this is by letting the status effect dissipate over time, or by consuming a Divine Blessing.

Preventing and Curing Status Effects[]

Status effect defense can be inherently increased by leveling certain stats:

Status Defense Governing Stat
Bleed Endurance
Poison Vitality
Frost Vigor
Curse Luck
