Its physical defenses rival or exceed those provided by even Havel's Set, allowing the wearer to shrug off damage easily when combined with the innate defense provided by equipping large weapons. Unlike other plate metal sets, Smough's Set provides extremely high defense against Strike damage, which is in fact greater than its defense against Regular damage. Rather, its "weakest" physical defense is against Thrust damage, which is still quite high.
While its defense against elemental damage is poor for its weight, even here Smough's Set is extremely resilient. It has no severe weaknesses against any elemental damage type, and in fact resists Lightning the most out of all elements, again complementing its resistance to Strike damage. This is backed by all-round resistance to status effect buildup, which the set has no particular weaknesses against.
The set's "poor" poise-to-weight ratio is largely due to its extreme weight, as the raw amount of Poise it provides is still exceedingly great, beaten only by Havel's Set in this regard. When paired with Smough's Great Hammer, there is virtually nothing that the player cannot trade against.
