Snap Freeze is a sorcery in Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel.

In-Game Description

One of the spells left behind by the young sorcerer Sulyvahn before leaving the Painted World. Creates a cloud of near-freezing mist.
Sulyvahn was born and raised inside the painting, yet had little use for his frigid homeland, since he had not yet experienced loss.

Availability[]

Located after the Depth of the Painting bonfire. Run to the left past the Great Crab and it will be on a corpse behind a Birch Woman.

Effect[]

Creates a cloud of freezing mist, rapidly inflicting 15 Frost buildup per tick on enemies within. Cloud persists for 5 seconds, and the duration cannot be extended by equipping the Lingering Dragoncrest Ring.

Use[]

Single player[]

Snap Freeze can be useful for inflicting Frostbite on large and slow enemies that are vulnerable to the status effect, particularly certain bosses such as Pontiff Sulyvahn and Father Ariandel, or on large groups of enemies where several can be caught in the cloud at once. As it costs less FP and has a much shorter duration than Frozen Weapon, it is ideal for setting the status effect and then taking advantage of the defense reduction on afflicted foes, as opposed to proccing Frostbite for the burst damage, resetting the buildup with Fire damage and then repeating.

As the cloud lingers for a short time, it is possible to inflict frostbite multiple times in one cast of snap freeze. When paired with a way of rapidly inflicting fire damage, such as with Fire Surge or a quick-hitting fire weapon, it's possible to deal large bursts of damage. This can be a difficult tactic to pull off effectively, as it won't work if the enemy exits the cloud, or if they don't give an opening for the player to apply their fire damage.

Online gameplay[]

Because it is a stationary cloud, Snap Freeze is more suited as a defensive sorcery than an offensive one, creating a terrain hazard at will that debuffs enemy players. Laying down a cloud as an invader can dissuade pursuing phantoms from giving chase, and is particularly useful for blocking off narrow paths such as hallways and bridges to create space. This can open up opportunities for setting up ambushes later down the line, or creating a temporary barrier behind which one can cast offensive sorceries like Great Soul Arrow, and can even be used creatively to hinder escape routes after an ambush is set.
