Endurance is a stat in Dark Souls.
Description[]
Investing in Endurance increases maximum stamina, equipment load, and bleed resistance.
Stamina[]
Stamina is represented by the green bar on the top left corner of the screen. One large chunk of the bar is approximately 28.57 stamina. Actions such as dashing and attacking reduce stamina which after a brief pause begins regenerating. If the player runs out of stamina, they temporarily cannot attack or dash.
If a character is blocking and a blow exceeds the amount of stamina needed to absorb the damage, that character is then staggered, left wide open, and takes the excess damage. This mechanic is dependent on stability.
Stamina is capped at 160, which is reached at level 40 endurance; further levels do not increase stamina. Stamina can also be increased by the Ring of Favor and Protection, even if the 40 endurance cap has been reached.
Stamina Regeneration Rate[]
Stamina has a base regeneration rate for all players, regardless of soul level or stats: 45 stamina per second. The regeneration rate can be increased passively while wearing the Mask of the Child, Grass Crest Shield, Cloranthy Ring, consuming a Green Blossom, or casting Power Within. Green blossoms and Power Within do not stack, but all other effects will stack with each other.
Regeneration rate is lowered by 80% while the player has his/her guard up or while climbing a ladder. Wearing heavy armor pieces reduces this regeneration rate by 1-2 stamina per second. If the player is heavily burdened (more than 50%), then stamina will regenerate 20% slowed. If the player is over-burdened, the penalty is 30% instead.
Equipment Load[]
Equipment load determines how much equipment the player can equip before being affected by movement penalties. A character's equipment load is 40 + Endurance. The Mask of the Father, Havel's Ring, and Ring of Favor and Protection also improve equipment load.
Movement penalties technically occur when the player's weight is above zero, but are most notable when above 25%, 50%, and 100% of the player's maximum equipment load. When below 25% equip load, the player performs what is colloquially referred to a "fast roll," and moves at near maximum speed. Above 25%, the player moves noticeably slower and performs a "mid roll," which has a slightly reduced invulnerability window, followed by a slightly increased window of vulnerability and inaction as the player recovers. Above 50% equip load, the player moves significantly slower and performs a "fat roll," with a much shorter period of invulnerability, followed by a much longer period of vulnerability and inaction. Additionally, an equip load above 50% reduces stamina regeneration by 20%, which stacks with the regeneration penalty from heavy armor. Above 100% equip load, the player cannot sprint, jogs very slowly, and stumbles if they attempt to roll. Additionally, stamina regeneration is decreased by an additional 10%, totaling a 30% reduction.
It is generally advised to keep equipment load below 50% in order to stay nimble.
