The Zweihander is an ultra greatsword in Dark Souls III.

In-Game Description

Ultra greatsword with a large, long blade. Wielded with two hands, yet still requiring great strength due to its weight.
Execute powerful attacks that take advantage of its weight, or utilize its sharp blade in thrust attacks.
Skill: Stomp
Use one's weight to lunge forward with a low stance and increased poise, and follow with strong attack for an upward slash.

Availability

Sold by Greirat for 6,000 souls once he returns from his pillaging travel in the Undead Settlement.

Characteristics

Weighing in at 10 units, the Zweihander is one of the lightest ultra greatswords in the game, being beaten only by the Astora Greatsword's 8 units. When upgraded, its scaling quickly rises to C/C in Strength/Dexterity, and once it is at +10, it has a B/C scaling.

The Zweihander is a very good weapon choice for both PvE and PvP. While it does not have any special abilities or innate elemental damage, dealing only average damage and having seemingly average scaling at first, this weapon is very light for its class and features one of the longest reaches of all ultra greatswords. If compared to the Greatsword, for example, it deals lower damage but has less than half its weight and near-equal reach.

Being an ultra greatsword, it shares the same high poise damage and the wide swing arc moves unique to this weapon class, being able to strike and stun multiple targets in a single swing. However, this also gives the Zweihander the same slow swings of said weapon type. Caution must still be taken when using it, especially against enemies that move quickly.

Because of the Zweihander's weight advantage, even players who have not invested much in Vitality are able to wield this weapon properly without sacrificing armor. Another thing to note is that, because it has a C scaling in Dexterity, characters that have a Dexterity-oriented build can also use this weapon effectively as the Zweihander's scaling stays at C/C for STR/DEX throughout upgrade levels +1 to +9. Adding all these traits together makes the Zweihander a universally useful weapon, allowing it to be wielded effectively by a wide variety of builds and be used in different situations.
